Iya Abiye Mawusi Ashshakir, also known as Mama Mawusi, has been supporting women in the birthwork for over 24 years and was initiated into birthwork and given the name Iya Abiye in 2015. She is a MH, Midwife Founder and Guardian Director.

Apprentice trained by Grand Sho Sho and Traditional Midwife, Nana Siti Opio, Iya Abiye Mawusi's feet are grounded in tradition. Mama Mawusi is also a certified childbirth educator, lactation consultant and wholistic birth doula. She founded The Mothership Institute in 2008 to address the infant and maternal health disparities in her community because of the success rates she encountered in her mothers and babies she decided to train others in birthwork. Recently opening The Mothership Center where she and her dedicated team selflessly serve unhoused mothers, expecting mothers, offer doula and midwifery training, and support to expecting fathers and families experiencing the loss of a child, she is walking in her purpose.
At The Mothership Center, they are dedicated to providing comprehensive support and resources for families at every stage of their journey. Their mission is to empower, educate, and uplift families through a variety of services tailored to meet the unique needs of our community.
