STATE OF BLACK SUSTAINABILITY REPORT:

INDUSTRY HOUSE SUMMARY

Alternative Economics

The Alternative Economics Industry House focuses on cultivating the practice of creating economic and social value through sustainable financial models, products, and markets. Members of this house have expertise in alternative economic models rooted in dismantling and divesting from the current extractive and exploitative global economic system built on African/Indigenous land and labor.

During our focus group with leaders in the Alternative Economies Industry House, alternative economics and sustainability were defined as follows:

"Alternative economics involve approaches that differ from traditional pathways, such as not going to college, starting one's own business, or finding other innovative means to secure employment. Sustainability is about creating something viable and enduring, ensuring it lasts over time without heavy regulation, and allows both individuals and community to create wealth. It is a long-term process that increases production and stands apart from capitalism. Sustainability is also about being supported by our own culture."

This summary calls out specific challenges and solutions that can be practically applied in modernity for economic mobility and a rise in ethical guiding principles that capitalism has long discarded.
