STATE OF BLACK SUSTAINABILITY REPORT:

INDUSTRY HOUSE SUMMARY

Green Lifestyle

Black Sustainability, Inc.’s Green Lifestyle Industry House is comprised of practitioners who encourage the adoption of green lifestyles, fashion and beauty. Although separate Industry Houses focus on Food/Agriculture, Wholistic health, Waste, this Industry House focuses on shifting habits, highlighting the social determinants of health and practical waste reduction strategies. This IH underscores biodegradable, sustainably sourced products and advocates for the complete avoidance of single-use items. Noting Afro-indigenous cultural wisdom is rooted in respect for the natural cycle of a balanced human relationship with the environment, the Green Lifestyle IH holds both solutions and the potential for creativity and improvement.

Time is cyclical within an Afrikan centered worldview, our science and what we produce are connected to spirit and consider generations past, present and future. By contrast, in a Eurocentric/western worldview, time is linear, there is no return, there is ‘...no going back’. These opposing worldviews impact our livelihood and impact each of us daily. Decisions made, which are rooted in western science, are tied to their concept of time and follow their values, or lack thereof. Environmental degradation and ecocide are the result of this warped worldview and communities across Africa and her diaspora are disproportionately negatively impacted.

The effects of environmentally harmful waste from non sustainably-based products is well researched and documented, however research on the impact it has on the Black community is only recently being acknowledged by governments around the globe. The focus on lifestyle changes across four human needs is explored: food, clothing, shelter/security, and spirituality. It is important to note that the needs explored are not based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as the linear order of needs is not aligned with the Afrikan worldview of an interconnectedness of food, clothing, shelter, security, aesthetics, health, self-actualization, kwk.

In this summary, readers learn about a shift, or rather return to adopting more sustainable lifestyles is crucial for the protection and healing of the Black community, Africa and her diaspora.
