Preparedness

The Preparedness IH is composed of practitioners across fields of preparation, climate and disaster emergency response and security that possess knowledge and capacities to effectively anticipate, respond and recover from the impacts of likely, imminent, or current hazardous events or conditions. This IH and the knowledge members possess is and continues to be essential in ensuring the resilience of any self-sustaining community, particularly as it relates to black sustainability.

The world has been experiencing an unprecedented number of climate and weather disasters with increased intensity and frequency, causing many governments, organizations, and communities to create and establish preparedness and resiliency plans to mitigate and adapt to this new reality that we live in. While extreme weather events and environmental catastrophes grow, the impacts of these crises vary significantly amongst geographical, social, economic, and racial groups and communities. Afrikan people are most vulnerable due to historical and current colonization, oppression, and marginalization across the world.

Although emergency management is nothing new, the rise in environmental and social crises occurring simultaneously and progressively, Afrikans on the continent and the diaspora are faced with additional and more complex challenges as it relates to ensuring our survival and sustainability in what seems to be an increasingly more disastrous world. When reflecting on the state of black sustainability as it relates to emergency management, the prominent questions arise in this summary:

How do Afrikans survive and sustain themselves in a society where their human needs and livelihoods are constantly threatened?

How do Afrikans remain safe and secure in a society in which they are constantly under attack?
