This IH summary is reflective of research drawn from Black Sustainability Summit presentations from 2016-2023 by prominent experts such as Christelle Kwizera; Yaw Agbede, Nkala Environmental; Moses West, AWG Contracting (Atmospheric Water Generator); Naomi Davis, Blacks In Green (BIG); Afia Zakiya, PhD, CEO/Founder AIDIKI & Vice-President AHSA; William Rennalls, Timeless Herbal Care; and Darrell Robinson, BioMedVerse, LLC. An exploration of the historical context and impact of water scarcity on Black communities in Africa emphasizes the potential cultural or traditional water management practices that can be integrated with modern rainwater harvesting techniques.
Throughout this report we analyze initiatives or programs specifically supporting Black communities' adoption of rainwater harvesting, green infrastructure, water, sanitation and health (WASH) and practical approaches to addressing social or economic barriers. Lastly, this summary discusses challenges unique to Black communities, such as land ownership limitations or lack of access to resources, and explores solutions for increased participation. This report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and solutions related to water access, management, and sustainability across various regions.
